Dublin Christmas Windows- Very Atmospheric!

Every year, Dublin ups its game Christmas festivity-wise.

Cheery Christmas lights are switched on in the main streets around mid November, and the city twinkles with delight. On Grafton street, an icon of Dubliners’ Christmases causes passersby to slow & gaze for a while: the Brown Thomas Christmas windows. They are always so magical, in a very posh & expensive sort of way–I suppose they’re the stuff many people’s dreams.

This year, though, I think these Christmas windows are a slightly creepy dream.

I’ve played with my photos to ramp up the 20s/30s Β  theatre theme of the windows, and this just seems to add to the eeriness. A bit of fun! Well, one of the Victorian Christmas traditions was the telling of ghost stories; eerie Christmas has its precedents…Β What do you think of the windows?

You should also think about heading to Waterford for Winterval, which starts 29 November with Santa’s arrival by Viking boat! We love Winterval!

If you need a bit of colour, the next two photos below may help πŸ™‚

Have a great run-up to the Holidays!

I love Dublin around Christmas time but have to agree, your photos put a different spin on the festive decorations! Love it, cool idea!

It started out because in order to minimize the glare on the windows (as you see on the fuller view shots) I had to put the phone right up onto the window– and then when I looked at them later I really noticed how in the close up shots the mannequins looked quite creepy/unhappy/frozen & not festive at all when you couldn’t see the decorations. I reckon there is a whole philosophical discourse that could be gone into, but I won’t πŸ™‚ & I’ll just let the photos (hopefully) bring people on a little journey. I LOVE Christmas Time & will have ‘normal’ Christmassy photos over the coming weeks, thats for sure!

Very different style of Holiday windows, but I love it!! Sort of Great Gatsby meets Nightmare Before Christmas πŸ™‚

Ahha, Katja, I love that!— Great Gatsby meets Nightmare Before Christmas πŸ˜€ Class!!!

Some of those mannequins really look quite scary… I do however love Christmas decorations and holiday displays. My favorite thing in Helsinki is to walk around downtown late at night when there’s snow, Christmas lights and you can just feel the holiday spirit in the air. All we need now is snow, where is it? πŸ™‚

Oh yes, where is the snow??! It can’t come to soon for me either!

Christmas spirits have disappeared from this area of Dublin. Won’t miss NOT seeing it in person!!!

LOL, I think you will enjoy Winterval much more πŸ™‚

Santa arrived by Viking boat? Now that I would love to see!

Yep, & then he’ll be escorted to his Christmas grotto by friendly Vikings (Waterford was a Viking city) where he’ll be seeing all the girls & boys to get their wish-lists πŸ™‚

Reeta @houseofanais

Wow, that is certainly something different, I’m not sure if kids would be that excited about those windows though…

Yeah, not really fun for the kiddies, Reeta– unless they like Great Gatsby mixed with Nightmare Before Christmas like Katja said πŸ˜‰

Oh my goodness- how interesting is this? And I agree- beautiful, but probably not the cheeriest windows I have ever seen! Thanks for sharing, your pics are very cool.

Thanks Farrah, it was good fun playing around with the different changes πŸ™‚

I love the Christmas lights!! Ours are all up here in Aberdeen but they haven’t turned them on yet. I CAN’T WAIT!!

That is a very different style for the holidays. Thanks for linking up.
